End-of-year Celebration and Happy New Year

(年末と新年のお祝い)

The happy end-of-year celebration is almost here, and we're excited about welcoming the new year! Everyone, How do you plan to spend your winter break? This time of year is filled with hope and the feeling that things are changing. Some people take it easy by relaxing at home, or some people go on fun trips. Others go back home to enjoy time with family, making the New Year a time for being together. No matter what you do, this seems to be a happy time for everyone.

Now, let's talk about Japanese New Year traditions! Starting on December 31st, called Oomisoka, families start getting ready for the New Year. People at home get busy cleaning, shopping, and cooking. They will eat a special noodle dish called Toshikoshi soba before midnight for good luck. Some families go to Shinto or Buddhist temples for Hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year. In Morioka, people often go to Sakurayama Shrine (https://maps.app.goo.gl/bJtw7p3nTKBRm8yw6) or Hachimangu Shrine (https://maps.app.goo.gl/PQhco8rEXjviPRdt8). If anyone doesn't have plans to go anywhere yet, you can stop by. At midnight, there is a big bell-ringing event called Joya no Kane all over the country, marking the start of the new year with hope.

As the New Year begins, some families watch TV together, while others go to high places or the beach to see the first sunrise. On New Year's Day, Japanese people enjoy Otoso (herb-flavored sake), Ozooni (mochi soup), and Osechi (traditional New Year's food). They also exchange New Year's greeting cards called Nengajo, and the first three days are holidays. People visit family, bosses, and friends to say hello and share good wishes. Kids are excited about getting New Year's gift money, called Otoshidama, from their family. If you are a shopping lover, at department stores during this time, there will be good luck bags or Fukubukuro for you to take a chance. This bag collects various products that the store has selected and put up for sale at a cheap price. Most of the time, the buyer cannot see or select the bag's contents. As a result, sometimes we may get a product with a very high price even though we paid only a small amount, worthy of the name "Lucky Bag.".

New Year's Day is a big holiday, and most businesses and schools take a break. People believe that gods visit homes, so they clean up, decorate, and put special things like kadomatsu, shimekazari, and kagami-mochi in their homes. They also prepare the traditional New Year's food, osechi. The culture and traditions in Japan during this time are really interesting and beautiful. I hope you all have a happy and successful New Year! Take care, and stay joyful until we meet again next year! Yoi Otoshi Wo!
